We’re Publishing Stephen King at Gamut in March!
Posted on February 14, 2017 2 Comments
So here’s the big news: we are reprinting a story by STEPHEN KING in the March issue of Gamut! The story we’re publishing is a powerful post-9/11 tale entitled, “The Things They Left Behind.” I’ve read more of King’s writing than any other author—almost all of his novels, and the majority of his short stories. He’s a big part of the reason I love reading and writing. I’ve been lucky enough to publish alongside him four times as an author (Shivers VI, Qualia Nous, Chiral Mad 3, and Cemetery Dance #72) but this is really something special. They rarely allow reprints of stories this long, and hardly ever online, not to mention we’ll have it for three months (and in the eBook). So, if you have been looking for a reason to subscribe, here you go. (Also, the buy one, get one sale is still going on for February.) Very exciting.

Resigning as Editor-in-Chief of Dark House Press

I just wanted to let you all know that effective immediately I have resigned as Editor-in-Chief of Dark House Press. I’m grateful to the opportunities that Victor gave me, and the support I got from Naomi, Catherine, Alban, and Jacob, but it’s time for me to move on. I was honored to work on so many excellent books. Each one of those books was an education, and an inspiration. I learned a lot. It’s very tough to run a micro-press, and it doesn’t take much to sink it. DHP will be dormant, but alive, for the immediate future. Scratch will be the last book I put out. I will be focusing on Gamut, my teaching, and my OWN writing! I wrote two stories last year, and four the year before—and I need to change that, be more productive. I also owe my agent a new book. It’s tentatively titled Fathom (dual meaning—depth of water and understanding). Thank you all for your support. Onward and upward.

9 incredible speculative fiction short stories

Maria always has great taste. Check these out.
December was a busy month for me: lots of feasting, lots of traveling, lots of reading, too. Here are nine stories that are for keeps.
Wooden Boxes Lined with the Tongues of Doves (when I write this, it’s not yet live online, but I will update! OR! subscribe so you can get it NOW! 💗), by Claire Humphrey in Beneath Ceaseless Skies. Quite simply one of the best short stories I read in 2016. Magic, love, war, and secrets kept for nefarious purposes… It’s the kind of story that made my heart skip as a reader, and as a writer, I feel like reading it a million times just to appreciate the amazing craftsmanship and luminous talent of how Humphrey creates a world, a mood, and spins it all into such gorgeous dark magic.
Where She Went, by Linden A. Lewis in Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
