Richard’s Submissions

Sounds like some sort of S/M site. But really, what I wanted to post up here, was a little bit of information on where I’ve been submitting and what kind of results I’ve been getting. It’s tough out there, but you can do it. Maybe you’ll find some cool new places too. Thanks to http://www.duotrope.com as usual for saving my butt. NOTE: There are also presses on here.

  1. Great list, Richard. The thought of hitting all these melts my head. But I’m going to make a real effort toward the last quarter of this year to get my stuff out there. Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. Well, you can eliminate all of the presses first, if you’re submitting for shorts, Craig. Most of the “Reviews” are more literary, but I do think Missouri, NOR, SER, VQR, and Black Warrior should be open – most of those include “experimental” under their duotrope.com profile. Redivider, Copper Nickel, Tin House, F&SF, Shroud, Cemetery Dance, Withersin, Shock Totem, Murky Depths would all be good too. Good luck.

    Peace,
    Richard

  3. I’m just a beginner in the writing game and I don’t know who to send my short stories to.

  4. Woo! Pleiades is on there!! My university’s lit mag! I help edit and arrange it, I’ll keep an eye out for you! No favoritism though, haha.

  5. Have you submitted to everything on this list, or just to some, but you view them as all worth submitting to, if you had the right work for them? thanks!

    • Hey, Morgan. I see this list as publications and/or presses that I think are worthwhile. It’s not 100% current and up to date. I have not submitted to all of them, but definitely a LOT of them. I’ve listed the places where I have published. Hope that helps.

      • Totally. There are so many journals out there (and seemingly not enough since no one wants to accept my shit—haha) that it is hard to get a read on which ones are legit and which are maybe better ignored. I realize no list is going to be exhaustive, but I appreciate that you share your list with people. You’re no wizard of oz, if you know what I mean. Your transparency on your journey as a writer is inspiring and helpful.

  6. Impressive list! Read your post “Where to Send Your Stories” over on Storyville and it was quite helpful. I usually submit to “literary” magazines but sometimes my stories aren’t quite literary, so that was useful to read. Thanks!

    • thanks, emily! hope it helps. and yeah, definitely need some different publications for those times your stories aren’t literary. although, these days, man, you can find so many different authors crossing over, Benjamin Percy in both The Paris Review and Cemetery Dance. good luck!
