The New Black (Dark House Press) releases TODAY!

TNB_PRReleaseDay

Today is the official release date of THE NEW BLACK! This neo-noir anthology is the first I’ve ever edited and it’s also the first Dark House Press title. I’m honored that so many gifted authors were willing to be a part of this book. I can’t thank them enough for taking the time, and for supporting this title, and the press. It’s getting great reviews everywhere, too. If you’re thinking of picking up a copy, consider doing so today, so maybe we can push it up the charts. If this book does well, and Dark House Press succeeds, we can continue to publish the kind of neo-noir, speculative fiction that needs to be read and experienced. Foreword by Laird Barron, with stories by Brian Evenson, Stephen Graham Jones, Craig Clevenger, Paul Tremblay, Lindsay Hunter, Roxane Gay, Kyle Minor, Benjamin Percy, Roy Kesey, Craig Davidson, Matt Bell, Richard Lange, Micaela Morrissette, Joe Meno, Vanessa Veselka, Nik Korpon, Antonia Crane, Rebecca Jones-Howe, Tara Laskowski, and Craig Wallwork. There are also 15 interior illustrations by Luke Spooner of Carrion House. Feel free to share this news, and to spread the word. THANK YOU!

The first blurb for THE NEW BLACK is Jack Ketchum

The first blurb for THE NEW BLACK, a neo-noir anthology that I edited for Dark House Press, is now in. It’s from horror giant, Jack Ketchum:

“THE NEW BLACK ought to be the New High Standard for dark fiction anthologies. It’s loaded with intelligence and talent. Every one of the pieces in this extraordinary compilation is worthy of your full attention.”—Jack Ketchum

Thrilled to have this excellent blurb. This book will be out in May, with a foreword by Laird Barron. Stories by Brian Evenson, Stephen Graham Jones, Craig Clevenger, Paul Tremblay, Lindsay Hunter, Roxane Gay, Kyle Minor, Benjamin Percy, Roy Kesey, Craig Davidson, Matt Bell, Richard Lange, Micaela Morrissette, Joe Meno, Vanessa Veselka, Nik Korpon, Antonia Crane, Rebecca Jones-Howe, Tara Laskowski, and Craig Wallwork. 15 interior illustrations by Luke Spooner of Carrion House. Book Covers: Work Edited and/or Published by Richard Thomas

I wanted to start a list of the beautiful book covers that I’ve either edited or published or both. I hope you enjoy the art and if you want more information, I’ve included links to Amazon, for those books that are already on the website. They are in reverse chronological order.

Storyville Column is up – Top Ten Authors You’ve Never Heard Of Before

Where to start, yeah? For this column I talk about ten powerful voices in contemporary literature that you may never have heard of before. Each one of these voices is somebody that has impressed me with their words, destroyed me with the honesty and emotion, and become a name that I will follow for the rest of my life. Head on over to see what I say about them, but here are the names anyway: Matt Bell, Tina May Hall, Craig Davidson, Holly Goddard Jones, Kyle Minor, Roxane Gay, Benjamin Percy, Lindsay Hunter, Alan Heathcock, and xTx. There’s something here for everybody, but know this: they all take risks, and they all hold nothing back.

My review of Crimes in Southern Indiana by Frank Bill is now live up at The Nervous Breakdown.

Maybe you’ve never heard of Frank Bill. Well, open them damn ears, son. I just went to the release party for Crimes in Southern Indiana down in Corydon, Indiana. Yes, I dragged Chris Deal, Livius Nedin and Robb Olson with me. Yes, there was a fifty foot sign that said HELL IS REAL about halfway down. YES, it was pouring rain as we entered Corydon, not a cloud in the sky, exploded dear parts on the side of the road. I can’t say I was shocked. Frank is a great guy, and one hell of an author. This is a visceral collection of gritty stories. And anybody that can pull Donald Ray Pollock, Matthew McBride, Scott Phillips, Jedediah Ayers and Kyle Minor to his reading, well, he must be doing something right. Read my review over at TNB for all of the details.

Here’s what Jed had to say over at his blog about the book:

“We are now down to the waiting for hard copies to land and I’m terribly pleased with the book. Just goes to show what you can accomplish when you’re surrounded by generous, talented people and you don’t give two shits about punctuation or spelling.

Y’know who gets a big fat round of applause for this book tho? Fuckin Jon Bassoff and Matt Kindt, thems who. Bassoff formatted it and pulled some strings for my cherry ass and Kindt designed the shit outta it. Y’know who else gets a big thanks? Our blurbers – Lawrence Block, Duane Swierczynski, Megan Abbott, Todd Robinson, Roger Smith, Tom Piccirilli, Stephen Graham Jones and Sara Gran. Without their cavalier attitudes toward public decency in the information age I would’ve been without the leverage to wrangle some juicy recommendations outta that prestigious lot.

So, who wants a copy?

Here’s what you need to know: this has been put together as N@B’s effort to help out our local bookselling heroes at Subterranean Books, which is why they’re the only place you can get it. As soon as it’s available, I’ll make that announcement and you can order one off their website or send me a suitcase full of cash to trade for it. What? You don’t order books online? Fine, come on out to a N@B event ’cause you know we’ll pimp ’em there. Are you attending Bouchercon in September? Subterranean Books will have a table in the book room and you can make for to purchase it there too. There will be no eBook.

Not good enough? Kiss my ass. Publish your own damn book.”
